Surrey
Woking is a lively commuter town in South West Surrey just 25 minutes from central London by direct train. Dating from the 12th century, Woking has a rich history of commerce and culture. HG Wells, the author, is one of Woking’s most famous sons. Woking has much to offer anyone considering moving to the area. There are two shopping centres with a variety of High Street brands, two theatres, the New Victoria and the Rhoda Mc Gaw which often preview shows before they debut in London in the West End. There is plenty to do in the evenings with numerous pubs and restaurants and a cinema. Sports and leisure are well catered for with numerous clubs including the usual sports plus archery and Bisley Rifle club which hosted the Commonwealth games in 2002. Further afield, keen walkers can explore the Surrey Hills and North Downs Way which are in easy reach. South coast beaches are an hour away. Woking has a range of good and outstanding state and private schools. There are 20 state primary schools as well as four secondary schools in Woking alone. In 2008, OFSTED (the Government Schools’ Inspectorate) identified 28 schools in Surrey that provided an outstanding educational experience for the children in their care. Woking is both close to London and the country and offers a pleasant environment in which to work for any teacher planning a move into the area.
