Hertfordshire

St. Albans, Hertfordshire’s only city, is found approximately 22 miles north of central London. Steeped in history, records of settlement span over 2000 years. Founded by the Ancient British, the first settlement was built on the banks of the river Ver and became known as Verlamion.

Following the Roman invasion the name was changed to Verulamium and the settlement grew into the first major town on the Roman road of Watling Street second only in size to Londinium [London]

After the Romans withdrew from British shores the town developed around the Benedictine foundations of St. Albans Abbey, named after Saint Alban, the first British Christian martyr who was beheaded sometime before AD 324.

Attracting thousands of visitors each year many of St. Albans historical buildings and sites remain intact. The 15th century clock tower shown below is a good example of this.

St. Albans is now very much in the 21st century. With one of the lowest unemployment rates in Hertfordshire, many people are moving into the area with young families in order to benefit from the excellent reputation of the quality of education provided by over 50 primary and 11 secondary schools within the city boundary.
